Pets In Spain animal charity achieved a new statistical record when they rescued 15 dogs in one day, with 14 of them from an illegal puppy farm. The dogs rescued were not puppies, it was the discarded mothers and fathers, forced over the years to reproduce many litters. Most of them were kept permanently in cages, some have old untreated injuries, including broken bones, one is blind, another has just one eye, and others are in ill health and diseased needing long term veterinary treatment.

A Pets In Spain fund raising event has been organized at AJ’s bar on El Raso urbanization, located just off the Lemon Tree road near Guardamar, on Friday 30th June, from 12 midday to 3pm. There will be various stalls, a Raffle, Tombola, Angel Readings, hand made greetings cards and live music provided by guitar vocalist Tim Taylor. A few of the rescued puppy farm dogs will also be making an appearance.

If you cannot attend this event you can still support the charity’s work with animals by making a donation:

We’re looking for more animal foster carers

PETS IN SPAIN are looking for more people to go on their animal foster carer register. Pet lovers who give homeless animals temporary shelter until they find permanent homes are known as foster carers. The process is typically an emotionally rewarding one for the foster family and a valuable experience for the animals as they learn basic social skills they otherwise wouldn’t gain by living in a shelter with minimal human interaction.

We need more people in the La Marina and surrounding areas willing to open up their homes to dogs and cats looking for a fresh start in life. Fostering often suits people who are unable to own their own pet either for financial or lifestyle reasons. The charity supplies all food and veterinary costs for the pet.

Fostering can be from a few nights to several months and it can transform a pets behaviour.

You may be wondering what the benefits of fostering are. For the dog or cat they are obvious. The safety of a home. The warmth of a bed. The touch of a hand. The love of a human carer. But what does the fosterer gain from the experience?

Our foster carers are highly valued members of our volunteer group. They provide a service that many people are not in a position to, and we work hard to ensure they feel appreciated and supported.

For the carer there is the knowledge that they have helped saved a life, and in doing so freed a space for another pet to be saved. It’s a heart warming experience to watch a pet develop and grow in confidence, to learn to trust, to regain health and fitness, and to learn some of those essential skills of socialisation and training.

And isn’t it amazing that its down to the carer that all this happens?

If you think you may be able to help us to become a animal foster carer please call us on 645.469.253, get in touch via email, or or message us on our Facebook page. We look forward to welcoming you to our team.

Critically endangered wild cat could be reintroduced to the UK

THE IBERIAN LYNX, an endangered wild feline species indigenous to south western Spain, could be reintroduced in to the UK after a successful 15 year captive breeding programme saw the wild cats population triple.

Iberian Lynx numbers fell critically following the decimation of its’ natural food source. A specialist rabbit hunter by nature, the global wild cat population stood at less than 100 at the turn of the millenium.

According to the charitable conservation group SOS Lynx if the Iberian Lynx died out it would mark the first feline species to become extinct since prehistoric times. But since 2001, a 15 year long captive breeding and reintroduction program led the Spanish Environment Ministry and Andalusian Environment Council, has boosted the Iberian Lynxs’ numbers to almost 400, despite having only 25 females.

The leopard-like cats (although considerably smaller) are known for their black tufted ears and fawn spotted coats. Most of the cats remain in Andalucia and stay in a dedicated and controlled territorial area of 20 square kilometers, but some have reached the hills near Toledo, Extremadura.

Following the projects’ success the Lynx UK Trust has been established to reintroduce the medium-sized cats to the British Isles, where they have not roamed for more than 1,000 years. The trust is surveying locations across the UK and meeting with local communities in suitable areas to identify potential release sites for a trial reintroduction of the wild cat.

The UK government is set to debate the issue later this year.

The Pets in Spain Charity, Featured In El Pais

PETS IN SPAIN is a British animal rescue and re-homing charity based in San Fulgencio on the Costa Blanca. The non-profit organisation has a governing committee of nine members, a total membership of 63, while staffed by 130 volunteers. The vast majority of animals rescued by the group come from the Costa Blanca and Murcia regions. The charity collaborates with other organisations and individuals throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

The charity believes that innocent creatures are falling through the cracks in the system. I met Mark Lewis (secretary of Pets in Spain) throughout June and July 2014, to document the charity’s activities and investigate the current situation in regards to animal welfare on the Costa Blanca. He introduced me to charity shop staff, animal foster carers, adopters and a whole assembly of benevolent creatures. I also met veterinary physicians at the Veterpet animal hospital during August 2014 in the town of Guardamar del Segura and documented their collaborative work with Pets in Spain.

Since its launch in 2004, Pets in Spain have found homes for approximately 30 animals per month. It has a roster of temporary foster homes for pets in need as well as individuals who permanently adopt animals. Its work is endless and the organisation is always seeking donations at its charity shop. The group constantly advertises for more foster carers as well as other volunteers to add to their ranks. It has a strong presence on social media and constantly updates followers on its rescue activities and animals offered-up for adoption.

‘Fundación Affinity‘ (Trans. The Affinity Foundation) is a Spanish non-profit organisation that promotes the positive role played by pets in society. The foundation stated in a recent study, commissioned by an online pet shop called ‘Kiwoko’, that one pet is abandoned every three minutes on the Iberian Peninsula. Consequently, the grand total of 150,000 animals are cast aside every year in Spain, which represents the highest number of domestic creatures abandoned in any European nation.

Pets in Spain supports the belief that animals who are victims of neglect, abuse, or abandonment must not also be victims of bureaucracy. Furthermore, educated citizens with a good moral compass should support that belief and voice their opinion. It would be pertinent to say, “He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” — Immanuel Kant.
